Writer Inspiration: 16 Dorchester Authors

Well this is it everyone, the big day has arrived and ANCIENT WHISPERS is on the shelves! It is pretty surreal, what can I say.

Ancient Whispers seen in Bay Shore, NY (courtesy of Scott Romanski)

I am not the only one to have a release this week and 3 author Dorchester authors who are at once friends and inspirations to me are celebrating as well: Emily Bryan with STROKE OF GENIUS, Christie Craig with SHUT UP AND KISS ME and Cindy Holby with BREATH OF HEAVEN.

So to celebrate, I decided to ask a bunch of Dorchester authors to give us some inspirations and guess what!!! They are all giving away books!!! So I have 3 big prices to give away. Read on for some wonderful advice then find out what you can win by including just one small comment!

Phyllis Bourne

“Believe in yourself and your work. No matter how tight the market, there is always room for your book.”

Marie-Claude Bourque

“Always write story that speak to your heart and ignore the trends. Because no matter what happens: rejections, critiques or negative reviews, you will always believe in your stories and be happy that you wrote what is truly in your heart.”

Find more about Marie-Claude at www.mcbourque.com

Emily Bryan

“Quite a bit of the writing business comes down to luck and timing–the right manuscript landing on the right editor’s desk at the right time. Of course, the harder we work, the luckier we tend to be, so no matter what, keep writing!”

Find more about Emily at www.emilybryan.com

Christie Craig

“I’ve been rejected by every editor for which I now write–a rejection doesn’t mean “never,” it means “not now.”

Find more about Christie at www.christie-craig.com
Leanna Renee Hieber

“Know what you write and who you are, your strengths and your weaknesses. No matter your subject matter, own it, be comfortable with it, live in it and love it with the ferocity of a steeled yet generous heart.”

Caroline Fyffe

Erin Kellison

“Words of wisdom from my mom about juggling writing and the rest of daily life: If the kids are eating off clean plates and wearing clean underwear, don’t worry about the rest. Get writing.”

Find more about Erin at www.erinkellison.com

Rose Lerner

“To be a professional writer, you have to take your job seriously, and
you have to have fun doing it–maybe not every day, but a significant
percentage of the time. Both those things are equally important.”

Find more about Rose at www.roselerner.com
Tracy Madison

“Writing is like exercising. Just as you need to exercise consistently to strengthen your body, you need to write consistently to strengthen your craft.”

Find more about Tracy at www.tracymadison.com

Barbara Monajem

“Make writing top priority. Reserve your most productive time of day for writing. Save the dishes and the laundry for when you’re so brain-dead you can’t do anything else.”

Find more about Barbara at www.barbaramonajem.com

Elizabeth Naughton

A critique partner you trust from the bottom of your soul is worth their weight in gold. It’s more than a connection on the writing level, it goes deeper into who and what you are and finding that person who gets you and your writing on a whole different level. It’s like a marriage in a way, except a really good CP can tell you the rock bottom truth and know you won’t break down into a puddle of tears. I’m published because of my critique partner. I don’t know what the heck I’d do without her. Luckily–as she said last night on IM–I won’t ever have to find out.”

Find more about Elizabeth at www.elisabethnaughton.com

Kerri Nelson

(Courting Demons, Dorchester ~ 2011)

My fave writer quote is from Joy Held: “Women with clean houses do not have finished books.” but I also like to say “You read because you choose to. You write because it chooses you.”

Find more about Kerri at www.kerrinelson.com

Gerri Russel

“You are already on the path of following your dreams. Everything you want can be yours if you just don’t lose faith in yourself. Believe it can happen, and eventually it will!”

Find more about Gerri at www.gerrirussell.net

 Helen Scott Taylor

“You can’t please everyone. There will always be some people who love your work and some people who don’t. Accept that from the start and don’t be put off by bad critiques or contest judges’ comments.”

Find more about Helen at www.helenscotttaylor.com

Gayle Ann Williams

“Always remember- this is your unique journey– yours. Follow your heart, write your own truth, and the readers will notice. Remember why you write, and keep that joy somewhere safe, so you can find it at a moment’s notice.”

Find more about Gayle at www.gayleannwilliams.com

I kept Cindy Holby’s words for last because she is such an inspiration.

Cindy Holby

My best piece of advice that I can give a newly published writer such as Marie-Claude is something she has already figured out. Cross promotion. At first I was going to go with the usual words of encouragement such as keep on writing, never give up, and keep plenty of book marks on hand. But after fourteen books and eight years of being published experience has shown me that cross promotion with my author friends is the best thing I can ask for.

As you can see, four authors from our publisher have the same release date. We have a widely varied audience. So I will be telling my friends about Christie Craig’s hilarious contemporary Shut Up And Kiss Me and Emily Bryan’s humorous regency A Stroke Of Genius. And they will, in turn do the same for me with my medieval fantasy Breath Of Heaven. Then we will all encourage our readers to try Marie-Claude’s first release, Ancient Whispers. By cross promoting we are reaching four times the readers. Makes perfect sense to me.

It all sounds very simple but there is more to it than that. It’s not only about finding someone that’s willing to give your book a shout out. It’s about finding like-minded people. Writing is a very lonely business. We spend most of our time alone with only the voices in our head for company. We also internalize a lot of things. Rejections, bad sales, bad reviews, the list can go on and on. We need friends who understand what we’re going through, who say, “Hey, I think you’re awesome.” And “Don’t give up!”

So I just want to take this time to say Hey, I’m grateful to everyone who’s ever told a friend or a reader you should read one of Cindy Holby’s books. And I’m also most grateful for my good friends in this business. The one’s who keep encouraging me when things are not going well and I’m fairly certain my career is over.

And since you’re here reading Musetracks I hope you’ll remember to look for my book, Breath Of Heaven on May 25th and also pick up Ancient Whispers by Marie-Claude Bourque, A Stroke Of Genius by Emily Bryan and Shut Up And Kiss Me by Christie Craig. All of them awesome writers, and all of them awesome friends.

Find more about Cindy at www.cindyholby.com

Hope you are all feeling inspired!

Am I ineligible from such a great prize pack?

This is a great post with wonderful company. It was just what the doctor ordered. I really needed the encouraging words of wisdom.

Thanks to all the Dorchester authors and congratulations to MC, Emily, Christie and Cindy.

  2. Hi Guys,

What a great blog. I love reading everyone else’s thoughts on rejection.

And Jenn, I thought the same thing. Can I put my name in the hat? LOL.

  3. Caroline says:

Ditto everything! The post turned out wonderful. I loved reading everyones words of wisdom. Good stuff…

BTW: The copy of Where the Wind Blows will also be signed, and if I’m eligible, put me in. LOL!

    Have a great day!

  4. AshBash says:

    i want book bundle 3!

  5. Great advice from lots of writers. Noticed a common thread of writing what your passionate about. So many books, hard to choose, I guess I’ll go with book bundle 1.

  6. Andrea says:

Wow, what an incredible giveaway!!! I loved reading through and seeing everyone’s words of wisdom and advice… it seems the concesus is in writing from the heart, and writing what you love, not what you think is going to sell! I also agree with cross promotion- what a powerful tool!!!

Excellent post and I wish each and every author here the best of luck!!!!

  7. chelleyreads says:

happy book release to all the author with books out this week!!! great post! love all the advise. thank you 🙂

    i want bundle #2 please

  8. Wonderful advice from all. Thank you. Not an easy decision among the bundles, but I’ll pick No. 1.

  9. Lynette says:

Awesome advice to an aspiring writer like myself who often wonders why she keeps trucking along.

I’d love to win Book Bundle 2 please!

  10. Wow! What a wonderful post – it’s so refreshing to read the great advice and know I’m not the only one out there who has such issues with trying to write. Thanks everyone! I now have some new inspiration notes on my board to help me keep going – especially Erin Kellison’s tidbit – Love that!
I’d love to win bundle #1 if possible! Thanks for this opportunity!

  11. Great advice. Would love bundle #1.

  12. darlyn says:

I want book bundle 3!Thanks for the contest!

  13. Such a great article, thanks for the great advice. I would love bundle 3, or 2, or 1!

  14. Mimi says:

Fantastic post! It was great to read everyone’s responses and their encouragement. Don’t know if I’m eligible or not – if I am, please drop my name in the bucket to win any bundle. BTW, this is an incredible site – I’ve shared it with some writer friends.

  15. Melissa says:

Loved this post! The advice and encouragment was awesome!! Thanks so much! Bundle #1 🙂

  16. Beth Carter says:

My favorite quotes–“…rejection doesn’t mean never. It means not now…” and the one about writers who have clean houses aren’t writing!

Thank you for the great post and all the supportive words from many authors–two of whom I know or e-know.I’ve added this site to my favorites and would love any of the bundles (any with contemporary writing would be my first choice).

  17. Beth Carter says:

P.S. Do all of you great writers have agents? If so, care to share names? I’m at the querying point for my women’s fiction which has elements of romance and suspense.

  18. Robin Kaye says:

What a fabulous post. I really needed it today and I’d love to win a bundle, #1 please.

  19. Thank you for the post, Marie-Claude et alles. Talk about inspiration! Lots of powerful, relevant words of wisdom to keep up unpubs going.

I’m in no position to give anyone advice about anything. However, allow me to share a quote that’s been most helpful to me lately:

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.”––Howard Thurman

Please enter me in the contest. Each of the bundles sounds like fun. However, please put me in the running for the first bundle, with the next one as my second choice.

I’ve checked out the online descriptions of all the above titles. The one that grabs this reader the most is Erin Kellison’s “Shadow Bound”. It features appealing themes and terrific cover art. I really go for paranormal romances where the hero isn’t a vampire, werewolf, or demon. And nowadays they’re so hard to find!

    Keep up the good work.

  20. Eve Paludan says:

This is awesome advice from great authors. Happy book release week!

Any bundle would be wonderfully appreciated and re-shared with other readers. Thanks!

  21. Awesome advice! And wonderful prizes!

If I had to pick one bundle, #2 please! After that, #1 but I wouldn’t refuse 3 either. 🙂

  22. Wow! This post was a great idea. Fun reading everyone’s words of wisdom, too. Congrats, everyone!

  23. Don says:

All the authors gave strong and encouraging advice.

    Certainly this writer:

    Phyllis Bourne

“Believe in yourself and your work. No matter how tight the market, there is always room for your book.”

Find more about Phyliss at http://www.phyllisbourne.com

  24. Wow; what a great idea for a giveaway! Some of these Authors I have heard; and they are great writters!!! The inspiring part of being an Author is no matter if we get rich from the sales of our books; we get the enjoyment of publishing our work!!

  25. Thanks to everyone who dropped by. I think the whole list of quote is awesome to read 🙂
I really loved the quote you shared Mary Anne.
And Beth for agents you can look on our sidebar for agents blog and look here:

Best is to go through and look at the agents web site to see what they take and you can look at authors in your genre to see who their agents are so you can query them.
    Good luck!

  26. Kristi says:

Definitely Bundle 3 with Phyllis Bourne! Thanks so much for entering me.

  27. Emily Bryan says:

Well, I’m inspired! Love to hear what my writing friends have to say about the craft.

  28. M-C … you have done it again. I have been following your career path on the GSRWA loop and you are the example I hope to (have the energy and drive) in order to follow your footsteps once I have a manuscript polished and ready to go. You always include a valuable return for those who check out the blog entries, etc. This offering is full of words to encourage aspiring writers, or those already published or accepted by agents, or rejected, and we can tuck the words in our gunny sack — carry them around for reference! Thank you for your time and your words, contributing authors, and for doing this M-C, and for the responses.

  29. Marion Martineer says:

    Thanks for the inspiration!!
But would you send book pack 1 to Australia? or any?
Love all the quotes, good luck everyone with your sales.

  30. Paula Brehm says:

I really enjoyed all of the advice, especially the ones on clean houses, clean kids and clean underwear. I had trouble picking a book bundle, but if I have to pick one, I’ll choose three.

  31. Lynne Levandowski says:

I find this a very informative site. I love reading the author’s comments/quotes on all things related to writing. I have spent over 30 years writing, with only one short story to show for it in print. Life got in the way, and I have all but given up on my writing to date because some of the smaller presses choose to steal my ideas for their own gain and reject my stories altogether. How does anyone fight such evil in the publishing industry, I don’t know.

I would love to win any of the three bundles and thank you for entering me.

  32. Bonnie H says:

Oh! TOTALLY awesome blog post – thank you SO much to all the authors for the bits of advice/inspiration! I would absolutely ADORE Bundle #1 – Pretty please 😀

  33. Margaret says:

Oh, boy, oh, boy, oh, boy!! I’m so excited. Great post. Great Pressies!!
    I’d like bundle #3 Please

  34. Robin Priddy says:

I would like to win bundle #3.
    Thank you

  35. Wow! They all sound so great! I’d like bundle #1, or as a second choice, #3. 🙂

    Thank you!

  36. Marianne Strnad says:

Fabulous advice from a variety of perspectives! You’ve all provided some really great stuff for the stuff of dreams! Thanks everyone!

  37. CrystalGB says:

Great giveaway. My first choice would be bundle #1. But I would be happy with any of the bundles. 🙂

  38. Viki S. says:

What a great giveaway. I’d choose bundle #3 if I won. Thank you!

  39. Fedora says:

I’d love #3 or #1. Thank you for sharing such wonderful words 🙂

  40. Joelle BB says:

    Great advice!

As for the bundles, can we say D. All of the above? If I have to pick just one, I’d go for Bundle #2. Thanks!

  41. Jennifer C says:

    If I won a bundle, I don’t think I’d do anything but read for a week. 🙂

  42. Deborah says:

If I won a bundle I wouldn’t know which one to read first. What great prizes. I’d pick 1, but all of them look great.

  43. Lura says:

Thanks for a great post with wonderful advice. Someday, I will be one of the authors quoted in such a post. I hope. ^_^

Please enter me in the contest. I honestly can’t decide which of the three bundles I want the most; all three have books I want to read. If I win, I’ll take which ever bundle is left. Does that work or do I need to specify? ^_-

  44. elaing8 says:

    great post.
    If I won I’d pick Bundle 1
and my 2nd choice would be bundle 3

    thanks 🙂

  45. Tina says:

Wow, what great prizes. I would love any of the three bundles. Thank you very much.

  46. Oh Marion,
You are sooo sweet. You guys at GSRWA have been there from day one. I remember when I wanted to submit my first love scene to a contest and someome volonteered to critique it for me. I wouldn’t never had dared to enter the contest without that. And the scene is in WHISPERS! It’s pretty wild.
Thanks for all the support all along 🙂

  47. cjparker says:

Great advice from each of you. I’ve published three books, and I’m working on my forth. I’ve not reached my goal yet, so, I’m still trying. My goal? A NY agent and a NY publisher.

  48. Some great quotes! Lots of luck with the book Marie-Claude. I’m looking forward to reading it.

  49. I love reading everyone’s thoughts. Being unpubbed I know there are so many things to learn. It is a bit daunting, but having so many people around to learn from makes it less overwhelming. Thanks for all the info on the blog.

  50. Mona Risk says:

What a great post. Thank you ladies for your words of wisdom. I have read all of Christie and Helen’s book, some of CL Wilson and the first of Barbara, and can’t wait to read more from all of you. Your advice on fighting back rejection comes at the right time. Thank you.

  51. Mona Risk says:

    Congratulations on the releases!!!

  52. Kerri Campbell says:

Oh WOW, such inspiring, fantastic authors, it’s so hard to choose which bundle to pick but if I had to I would say bundle #2 please. I’m still hoping to find my inspiration for my goals in writing but these authors have given me some great ideas where to start. 🙂

  53. Lexi Connor says:

Thank for the inspiration, ladies! If I was a winner, I’d choose #3. After that, either of the other two because ALL of them sound fantastic!

  54. Thanks everyone for your comments. I’m happy to see that the choice of bundle is equally balanced.

  55. I forgot to add which bundle in case I win. I like #2.

  56. JACLYN says:

“You can’t please everyone. There will always be some people who love your work and some people who don’t. Accept that from the start and don’t be put off by bad critiques or contest judges’ comments.”

I love this advice from Helen. It’s so true. My mother used to say,”you can please some of the people some of the time but not all of of the people all of the time.” Getting published isn’t easy. It requires a lot of work and a lot of luck in reaching the right editor. Most of all, you have to have a compelling story.

    I’d like number three.

  57. shawn says:

I feel so much better now. I thougt I was a horrible person because of the pile of laundry that went ignored in my laundry room while I pounded out pages.

  58. I would be happy with any of the three bundles, as there seems to be some intriguing titles there… and that was some great words of wisdom for us aspiring writers!

    Armand Rosamilia

  59. Thanks for the encouraging words! I needed them today as my laundry is piled sky high while I sat there writing. How about bundle number 2?

  60. Julie says:

Wonderful wonderful words from great authors! Thanks for sharing some wisdom with us, and for holding this amazing contest. I’d love to have any of the bundles, but I think #1 and #2 are edging out there…

  61. Thanks for the inspiration, and congratulations on the new releases! A special thanks to Kerri Nelson for making me feel better about my messy house:) How come the vacuum cleaner never “chooses” me?!?!

  62. Tamara Gill says:

This was a great blog!! Such wonderful inspiring words for published and aspiring writers like myself. I fully agree with cross promotion. I’m a member of RWA Australia and America. I’ve made many friends and learnt so much while doing so. Writers are great company to keep.

  63. Tamara Gill says:

Sorry, forgot my bundle pick. #1 or #2 Thanks!

  64. Heather Brewer says:

I would love to be entered for either bundle 1 or bundle 3.

Thanks for such a great contest.

  65. Barbara Elness says:

I loved to win bundle #2 – and #3 is my second choice. Really, they’re all a great bunch of books and they’d all be wonderful to win. Thanks!

  66. Your timing is immaculate. I just started reviewing for Book Bloggers and for Book Addicts Annonymous both on Facebook. I was told to review whatever I happened to be reading. I would prefer reviewing new releases that have not all ready been covered by the usual outlets. Any of the above bundles works for me. Thanks for the opportunity.

  67. Kwana says:

What a wonderful post. Thanks and congrats. I’d love to be entered for bundle 3 or 1.

  68. Pam Owldreamer says:

I love to read the worlds other writers create and I love to write and create my own stories and the worlds my characters live in. Writing, as writers know, is a lonely job. No one can write what is in a writers head but the writer who is being told by their characters to sit down and bring them to life. That is what we do. Getting a book published is a process that is not for the timid, thin skinned or faint heart. Just because ya write a good book doesn’t mean it will be published. Why do we do it? Because we can’t not do it. It isn’t just what we do,it is what and who we are.Having a network of other writers is essential. When we all share and promote each other,we all win.

  69. Pam Owldreamer says:

Good read, love the pictures and forgot to leave choice of book bundle on first long winded comment Bundle one please. Second choice two.

  70. Yvonne B. says:

    Wonderful post!

I would like to drop my name in for Bundle 1 or 2 although all of the books sound wonderful

  71. Calisa says:

I really love Kerri Nelson’s quote. “You read because you choose to. You write because it chooses you.” So many people just don’t understand why we write and trying to explain could take hours. Yet, she has managed to sum it up in just two concise sentences. I love it. (I could use her help to write my loglines!;)) All these books look wonderful. It’s not fair to make us choose, but…Bundle #1 (or #3).

  72. iokijo says:

Thank you for the fantastic opportunity, and for the words of wisdom from the authors that good for everyday..
Hard choosing with so many good reads..
    ok.. bundle 3, or 1 or 2 ..
    Good luck everyone.

  73. Kerri Nelson says:

~~Joanne K. Thanks for your comment! Vacuum cleaners are evil!! 😀

~~Calisa Wow! Thanks so much for your lovely words. I’m glad my words reached out to you.

    You both made my day!

  74. My first choice is #1, and my second choice is #3.

  75. Very inspiring, great stuff guys!

And thank you Gerri Russell…those words can relate to all things in life not just writing 🙂

Bundle #2 looks like fun to me!

Keep writing everyone…and here’s my own quote: Live Your Dreams!

  76. Nice words. I know the feeling. I write because I have to. Something inside me won’t let me stop. I feel it’s this way with all writers.

  77. This was such a great idea, Marie-Claude, I’m glad to have been a part of it and CONGRATULATIONS on your well-earned release day! (And happy release day to all my fellow Dorchester authors!!) Blessings and best wishes!

  78. PS I can send my copy of Darkly Luminous signed too!

  79. Jessica says:

I’d love to be entered for bundle #1!
These are wonderfully, awesome quotes!!! Thank you.

  80. Reading through these words of advice and encouragement is a needed shove to get back to my own words. Writers are great. I would love bundle 1, 2 or 3.

  81. Brenna says:

Wow! Such good advice from everyone! Congratulations to all who have releases coming up.
Could I be entered for a chance at bundle #1, please?
Second choice would be bundle #2. But I wouldn’t say no to bundle #3 either! There are too many great choices!

  82. Lori says:

Wonderful quotes and a great informative website. I would love to win bundle #3 or #1. Wonderful authors in all groups, so hard to choose!

  83. Jennifer says:

Wonderful, inspiring advice. I’ll share a quote I have taped on my screen’s border: “Doubt indulged soon becomes doubt realized.” Frances Ridley Havergal

Any of these bundles would help me stave off doubt, preferred in the order of 1,2,3! (Recognize authors in #1 from an online group I lurk in, not so much into anthologies so #3 last. They all look intriguing.)

  84. Jana Ferguson says:

Wow great inspiration, especially for a Yet-to-be author! Awesome book bundles too! I would like bundle #3 or second choice bundle #1.
    Thanks everyone!

  85. Margay says:

I agree with everyone else – great inspiration! I would be happy with any of these bundles, but #2 is my first choice (followed by #1).

  86. Brandie N says:

Great quotes! I need to post a few on my computer 🙂

  87. Liane Spicer says:

I won’t enter for the prizes – it’ll cost you a bundle to send those books all the way to the butt end of the Caribbean where I live. But I’d like to say, great advice, ladies! Thank you so much!

  88. Carol Burge says:

Huge congrats to Marie-Claude and all 16 Dorchester authors here today! Thanks for the inspiration and the advice (I can use all I can get). 🙂

Best of luck with everyone’s release!

    p.s. I’d love to win bundle #2

  89. Rania Sarri says:

This found me in one of my darkest hours. So much encouragement and inspiration in those words! Thank you for the post. You all deserve to be read. But then, who doesn’t?
If you could count me in, I will appreciate any bundle.

    Greetings from Greece,

  91. Leslie says:

Awesome post and giveaway. Love the words of inspiration.

I would pick Bundle #1 for first choice and Bundle #2 for second choice. Thanks for the chance to win!

  92. Susan says:

I chose Bundle #3 because this is the second time I’ve received great advice from Tracy Madison, and my second choice is Bundle #1, because Gayle Anne Williams reminded me of why I love to write and why I have to finish my bride book. Thanks for the inspiration, ladies.

  93. Mariska says:

    Congrats Ladies 🙂

i would really like to read all books in bundle #1 !

    Congratulations on your first book.

I’m lucky to have read some of both Christie Craig’s and Emily Bryan’s books. Anyone who wins there books are in for a treat. I would love to win anything from this group.

Thanks for all of your excellent advice.

twist it into a new shape, into something compelling that

will knock the socks of an editor because he or she has NOT

seen it before. You will bring joy and radiance to the

life of someone you WANT to make happy, and in doing so you

will make your sale.” author unknown

Thanks for the good advice and well done for the new releases. For an aspiring author, it’s inspiring to hear that other people have difficulties with the craft and that they can be overcome! Thanks for the opportunity for the chance to win so many fantastic books.

I forgot to list what bundle I’d like to win. Any of them would be great. But if I have to choose, bundle three. But two and one would be great too.

Wow. As a newbie I haven’t tried to wrap my head around anything more than finishing my first book. To see this drive and determination post-completion is, frankly, awe inspiring! The candid comments both encouraging and educational.

    Thanks for the multiple ‘pep-quotes’!

I’d adore #3 or #1, having had a peek at Shadow Bound and A Tale of Two Demon Slayers from the mini mags (sorry not up on the terms yet) at a conference.

  108. Sakeena Nealy says:

The words of encouragement shared by all of the authors can also be used in everyday life as well. The way my day has been going along with some devastating news from a very close friend, these words were very uplifting for me. Thanks for sharing.

First choice of bundle is number 3, with number 2 or 1 as second. They are all great bundles.
