Cover me! I’m going in!

Song of the day: The Way You Move by Since October

I’m a woman. I’m a writer. So it stands to reason that I am fickle and never quite satisfied. Shocking, I know.

Something has been burrowing in the back of my mind for some time now. It wasn’t until recently I decided to confront the gnawing little critter. My debut pirate romance Blood and Treasure has a couple of flaws. *gasp* The longer I tried to ignore it, the louder the flaws scratched, chattered, and hollered at me to fix them. I became obsessed by those damned errors. Now we authors know that no matter how polished and shiny our masterpieces are, we will find something we want desperately to change or improve. It’s the nature of the beast.

I could stand the incessant badgering no longer. The past couple of weeks, I poured over Blood and Treasure correcting wayward punctuation and banishing anachronistic words that somehow, either by oversight or blind eye, made it into the novel. The result? A breath of relief reviewers and readers didn’t find my faux pas—or found them serious enough to string me up by my toenails. Over dramatic and paranoid? Perhaps.

That’s not all. As much as I love my cover, I realized something very crucial. The cover need to be revamped. This became glaringly obvious once I saw the new cover for my latest pirate tale Beneath the Water’s Edge (forthcoming – I promise). These covers needed to match in tone, mood, setting, font, and heat level. Especially since they belong to the same series. As much as it hurt to let go of the current cover, it was imperative to move on. (I’ll miss you, Jimmy! Please don’t forget me. I’ll write every day! ) It’s marketing. And it makes sense.

The downside – all those print copies and trading cards sitting in my closet. I feel a sale coming on!

So what do you think? If you want to know who created the cover, check back for my next Link of the Week.

Jenn, I’m in your shoes. The cover and typos are two of the reasons I’ve held off doing print for any of my books. BTW, I love the new cover for Blood and Treasure!

I cringe knowing I have all these print copies. Not that the mistakes were glaringly obvious or anything. But anything less than perfect is hard to stomach.
Thanks!! Glad you approve of the cover!

Time…ha! I couldn’t write a single new word until this project was out of the way, Bev. Courage…I’ve got plenty of that. Energy…I tip my hat to energy drinks. 🙂

      Thanks so much, Bev!

    Love the new cover, Jenn!

I labor over the final edit so much and take so long in editing my manuscripts, hoping and praying I can catch all the typos, that I haven’t gone back in yet to read and edit them again…But I do ask friends and family who read my stories if they found errors…and I immediately change the errors if they do! That’s one wonderful thing about indie!!!

Funny thing, Tess. NO one caught these mistakes, and it had been read by many, many eyes. It was only after I went through the editing process with my editor at Carina Press that I found these errors. Go figure. 🙂
Like you, I’m just glad I could make the corrections and reload the book.

      Thanks!!

  5. THIS is a BEAUTIFUL cover. It looks like it came from a publishing house, which means you’re competing with the Big Girls and Boys.

    Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I can’t wait to hear how you did this. My guess, by looking at the cover, i that you hired serious talent. Am I right?

LOVE this cover. The bright colors are beautiful and real eye-catchers. That’s the upside of self-pubbing. I cringe when I look at the covers for my first trilogy. If only I could have them redone. I’ll have to wait until the contract expires then redo EVERYTHING and self-pub myself. You’ve inspired me!!
    Thanks for sharing!

Ooohh…I’ve inspired you! That is so COOL, Robin! My next one, Beneath the Water’s Edge, will also be a real eye-cathcer–if you know what I mean. Damn, I love pirates!

      Thanks, girl!

I know that feeling! Some might call it anal retentive or obsessive, but you and I know better, right? I prefer to think of it as passion. ;o) You want your work to be as close to perfect as possible. That’s why mine isn’t in print yet either. I do look forward to reading your book! ;o)

Oh I’m sure if I read it yet again, I’ll find more things to change and more words to tweak. As a general rule, once I’ve made up my mind that the novel is polished, I won’t go back and read it for this very reason. It’ll will never be perfect in my eyes. But I do love it just the same.

Thanks, Suzan. I hope you enjoy reading it.
