    Phineas has never been able to remember any farther back than the year 1599. And therefore his death that year has become what he considers his “first.”
    Particularly gruesome, since he had inadvertently offended Queen Elizabeth by commenting publicly that Essex had gotten a raw deal all those years previously.
    Oops. Spies loyal to the monarchy turned him in and he was treated worse than any actual traitor.
    Hung until nearly dead, disemboweled, and then drawn and quartered. And that, children, partly explains the aversion Phineas has had toward horses for all these hundreds of years.

    At least, that’s what the psych doctors told me. Over the years I’d learned not to trust their easily explained, off the cuff diagnosis. There was a lot wrong with this guy, though. You could see it in his blank, unfocused eyes. I nearly believed them especially when the suicide attempts began. Then I realized he expected me to join the activities…

    (it’s late & I gotta put the dogs out one last time)
