Hump Day Kick Start – Writing Prompt #5

Writing prompts to kick start your muse.

revenge

Oops! Sorry about that. Or am I?

Revenge, retribution, vindication, vengeance—what could drive someone to stage an accident? How far would they go? A minor mishap? Years of them, perhaps? Or maybe something more…permanent. You tell me. Share your ideas and/or post your creations, even if it’s just a line or two. I’d love to hear them.

Katrina smiled as the confused policeman burst through the door and then stopped in his tracks — his eyes wide as saucers.
“What’s going on here?” he asked, as his eyes darted sufficiently to establish Katrina was the only living human in the room.
“It started out as an argument,” she replied, “but that was seven years ago. Old history.”
“Huh? You’ve been arguing for seven years?”
“Not the entire time,” answered Katrina. “We had moments…”
“So what caused… this?” the cop pointed the muzzle of his pistol toward the body on the floor.
She rolled her eyes. “Merely another disagreement. Well, actually,” she clarified, “more of the same old disagreement.”
“Can you explain why he’s dead?”
“Well, I told him never to do that again.”
    “And…?”
    “He did it again.”
The officer eyed the blood on Katrina’s hands and saw her knife for the first time. “So that’s why you stabbed him to death? Revenge over something he did that you told him not to do?”
“No,” she replied softly. “Revenge is beneath me. But sometimes accidents happen.”
“So what did he do that set you off?”
“I won’t bore you with the details, officer. Suffice it to say, that — once too often — he left the toilet seat up .”
