Hump Day Kick Start – Writing Prompt #38

Writing prompts to kick-start your muse.

It’s October! Yay! I love October—the weather’s still warm, the colors are bright, the smells are unique to fall, the decorating of the season, and the nostalgia of Halloweens past.  And eerie ghost stories! So all month, I’m posting prompts from the dark side. Get your scary on!

If today’s post doesn’t creep you out, then maybe you are already dead.

Share your ideas and/or post your creations, even if it’s just a line or two. I’d love to hear them.

  1. Jeff Salter says:

“Sally, did you hear that?” asked Bob.
    “Huh? What?”
    “Did you hear it?”
    “I was sound asleep.”
“Listen, Sally. Do you hear it?”
Sally listens. “Is that a baby crying?”
“Has to be. What else makes that noise?”
“Well, we don’t have a baby, so just go back to sleep.”
“I can’t sleep now,” said Bob. “the baby won’t shut up.”
    “It’s not a baby. Couldn’t be.”
    “How do you know?”
Sally groaned and sat up in bed. “You’re not going to let this go, are you?”
“How can I?” Then he grimaced. “And how could you?”
“Maybe it’s a wild animal. I’ve heard there are animals that make a noise like a human baby. Some sort of ring-tailed Snarter-Cat or something.”
“Hmm. Maybe a mountain lion. But we don’t have many of those around here.”
“Well, what do you propose to do about this alleged baby, Bob? Now that you’ve totally wrecked my night’s sleep. Now that you’ve got me worried about cougars and bears and anacondas terrorizing us in the middle of the night.”
    No response.
    “Bob?”
Sally heard a new sound: snoring. Bob was sound asleep.

Ugh…. Just like a man. Haha! Leave it to a woman to investigate. I’m pretty sure I’d be hiring an exorcist. Or moving.
