Link of the Week – Holiday Contests

December 6, 2016

Holidays contests are under way! Here is your chance to nab you some goodies.

I am running a Goodreads contest for a free paperback copy of Dead Man’s Kiss.

JenniferBrayWeber_DeadMansKiss_HRThe blurb:

Forced to make a bargain…
One drunken night in Cuba lands Captain Valeryn Barone in a life or death situation. To escape the gallows, Valeryn must agree to a bargain only a fool would make: Escort the tempting and tenacious niece of his captor across the Caribbean or lose his ship, his crew and his life! The caveat? The beautiful Spanish woman must remain untouched for the entire voyage.

Determined to get what she wants…
Catalina Montoya will stop at nothing to get what she wants—even when trouble is certain. Sent to live with her uncle after a scandalous affair, Catalina intends to concentrate on her dream to become a renowned naturalist. She never expected her uncle would send her with a notorious pirate to further her studies. Worse, she never expected to want the devilishly handsome pirate more than anything else.

It’s a battle of wills…
Now Catalina only has 8 weeks to seduce Valeryn and collect her specimens before he returns her to her uncle. And Valeryn has 8 weeks to secure his redemption. Except neither would be that lucky. Not when ruthless enemies threaten to destroy them at every turn. Can Valeryn save those that foolishly depend on him? Can he resist Catalina’s heart? Does a dead man walking even have a chance?

Roller Coasters and Crabs

August 18, 2016

On this roller coaster of publication, writers expect to be faced with a certain amount of, let’s say, excitement. We hear the unmistakable clackety-clack-clack on the way up the ride of publishing a book. Feel the adrenaline build as we teeter on the top of the first dive. Throwing our arms high or hanging onto the bar, we plummet down, down, down picking up speed. Hairpin curves with sales, rankings, good reviews, harsh criticism, and how we will be received by our peers.  It’s all part of the fun, right? Right?cc - rf - TexasCycloneSunset640

This summer, the roller coaster took me by surprise by blasting me through a barrel roll. First, I received scores from a prestigious contest I did not final in. Oh, you know how this story goes. The book is either incredibly awesome or the reader would rather drink antifreeze before turning one more page. I’m usually good with that. It means that my writing has produced extreme emotional reactions. But when one of the judges not only claims the book had no satisfying ending but that it wasn’t even a love story, well, that floored me. Most of you know that I write historical romance, paranormal romance, and some erotic romance. Romance is always a central theme in my books, no matter the genre. I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around how a judge felt that the book failed to meet the requirement of a happily ever after love story. Where did I go wrong? Did I go wrong? Maybe not. I try to remember that this is just an opinion of one person and that’s okay.

But wait.  Three different reviewers have given three of my books high accolades in recent days, including the one mentioned above. For them, my tales are a real pleasure to read. I should be overjoyed, busting at the seams. And I am, truly and humbly. While poking around Amazon, I stumbled across another review written several months ago that basically states  my characters suck, my writing sucks, I suck. This was not a malicious attack, but rather someone who simply hated my book. Regardless, it still stings. And this is why I don’t make it a habit of reading my reviews. Then there is the personal message a reader sent to me via social media and another who emailed me just this week. Both ladies took the time to reach out to me, to say they really love my books and want more.

Round and round my emotions go. Yep – I’m a little green in the gills. I know I’m not the only one. Fellow MuseTracker Stacey has experienced the same thrills and chills. And I’m quite certain that most of our writer friends and acquaintances have, too. The stomach-dropping dips are simply part of the ride.

Stacey, a pillar in my support system, probably won’t remember this, but she once said, “You’re a creative crab.”

Imagine if you will a basket of crabs. There’s always one who tries to escape but the other crabs in the basket will keep pulling it back down to certain doom. The would-be escapee crab is the creative crab and the other crabs are critics. All this is true whether you are a newbie author or a seasoned pro. The unsavory opinion of one or two really poisons the pot. It is always that bad review or awful contest score that sticks with us, almost negating all the praise. Almost.

We shouldn’t let the critic crabs keep us down. We can climb out of their basket, yes we can. We must remember all the acclaims, successes, happy readers, and, most of all, stay true to ourselves. Dismiss the negativity, honest or otherwise, grab ahold of the rim, and pull yourself up.

Ours is a path that will surely have its ups and down, topsy-turvy flips, and bone-jerking turns. So buckle and enjoy the ride.

Anyone care for melted butter with their crab legs?

It’s Pitch Day at Editor Shop with Karen Grove of Entangled Publishing.

November 13, 2013

Good Morning and welcome to another round of Editor Shop.

Make sure you follow the rules for pitching. You can find all the details under the Editor/Agent Shop tab above.

Good Luck!

We have the awesome Karen Grove with Entangled Publishing as our guest Editor, and she coming with a BANG!

Entangled just launched it’s New Adult line Embrace, and they’re doing a mega give-a-way! Here is the link to the Embrace Launch Giveaway. It is open to everyone (whether you’re pitching or not) and it will run through the end of the month:

They’re giving away a Kindle Fire, an iPod Shuffle, and a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card.

And even more… Entangled is doing something special for some of our ‘pitchers’. They’ll be giving away some advance reading e-galleys of Embrace’s upcoming December releases!

• Forged by Fate by Reese Monroe (NA paranormal)

• Sneaking Candy by Lisa Burstein (NA contemporary romance)

• Ruined by Jus Accardo (NA paranormal)

*FROM KAREN: [Please note that these are early peeks at upcoming books, and they may have errors in them as galleys are made from uncorrected proofs…but a few tiny errors are worth getting a first look, aren’t they?]

And here’s some information about what Karen is looking for:
Embrace is seeking fresh, strong voices that capture the emotions and complexities of characters straddling the line between high school and the adult world of work and family. Our ideal protagonists are from 18-24 years old; these characters are legally adults but are still finding their way to adulthood, separating from their parents, heading off to college, experiencing full-time employment, searching for love, and even beginning families. For these characters, it’s a time of experimentation and metamorphosis. Embrace novels are digital first and priced from $2.99 – $4.99.
At Entangled, we believe New Adult is an extension of Young Adult fiction—dealing with many of the same issues of identity and exploration but with a more focused perspective toward breaking away from parental supervision and the impending responsibility that goes with adulthood. We are looking for books told from the point of view of the emerging adult, defining a critical period of decision making and growth. There should be an element of romance in every Embrace title, though it does not need to be the main focus of the story.

Entangled New Adult publishes across genres, and we are looking for engaging voice and bold, fresh stories in
• Contemporary
• Romance
• Mystery
• Suspense/Thrillers
• Historical
• Fantasy
• Science fiction
• Paranormal

And here’s a bit about Karen!

Karen Grove, Editorial Director of Embrace (New Adult) and Senior Editor

Karen Grove has been an editor for 28 years, working with authors at Harcourt and then Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, concentrating in young adult fiction. She has worked with such prestigious authors as Han Nolan, Carol Plum-Ucci, L. A. Meyer, Ann Rinaldi, Adele Geras, Kathryn Reiss, Gary Paulsen, and New York Times bestselling author Susan Beth Pfeffer. The majority of her books have earned starred reviews from major review journals and such prestigious awards as the National Book Award, Michael L. Printz Honor, multiple Edgar Allen Poe Awards (Mystery Writers of America), and a RITA Award (Romance Writers of America). In addition to her editing, she owned and operated a local business newspaper for 10 years. She resides in Southern California with her husband and college-age son.

Karen looks for stories with quirky characters, compelling voices (even snarky ones, if there’s heart behind it), and settings that are so strong they become characters themselves. She adores small-town and Southern novels, with their strong sense of community and personal relationships, as well as stories with deeply flawed characters that she can both love and hate. Karen reads across a wide range of genres and enjoys gritty contemporaries, dark urban fantasy, apocalyptic stories, suspense/thrillers, mystery, romance, and tales that contain elements of the supernatural as well as sports (hockey, soccer, football, equestrian)—though maybe not together. Although Karen edits both Adult romantic fiction and YA, she is especially interested in stories that feature protagonists grappling with life after high school…those 18-24 year olds embarking on their first foray into independence. The only topics that don’t particular interest her are high fantasy (she prefers her fantasy to be firmly grounded in the real world) and deeply rooted science fiction. No matter what the age group or genre, Karen wants a story to move her—to make her laugh, cry, tense in fear, or cause her to think in some way she hasn’t considered before.

Good luck everyone!

I’ll see you Saturday morning around 10:00am E.S.T. Wait until you see me post the word GO!

Happy reading and writing.

A KISS IN THE WIND – One Year Celebration and Giveaway!

March 27, 2013

Song of the day: What Have You Done by Within Temptation (theme song to A KISS IN THE WIND)

This week marks the one year anniversary of the release of A KISS IN THE WIND, the second in the Romancing the Pirate series. I’ve enjoyed success over the year and excited by the continuing sales.

ChampagneAnd so to celebrate, I am giving away an e-copy of the book.

There are two chances to win.

1. Comment on this blog post.

2. Join my mailing list here at my website.

Easy peasy!

So let’s get this party started.

For those of you who have read the book, you have my gratitude. And I offer you a little known fact. A KISS IN THE WIND was written with an epilogue. My publisher had decided not to add it. But I couldn’t just let it go. Ooooh no! Sure, there was a happily ever after. But I had more to tell. More important nuggets for the reader. And so, if you have read the book, click this link to read the rest of the story. *SPOILER* If you haven’t read the book, I’d advise skipping the epilogue. Just sayin’.

For kicks and grins, I thought I’d give a taste of the book. You know, to entice you.

The Blurb:

Marisol Castellan is in trouble–again. Against her pirate father’s orders, she snuck off their ship to intercept a message meant for a rival captain, one that offers a clue to the whereabouts of her estranged brother Monte.

Pirate captain Blade Tyburn is not pleased to find the letter he’s been waiting for is missing. He’s even less pleased when he discovers the thief is a raven-haired beauty who bewitches his senses and muddles his thinking. The note gives the location of a silver-laden ship that’ll make his fortune; Blade must find it, and if that means bringing Marisol along on the voyage, so be it.

Marisol believes Monte sails on the very ship Blade is to meet and strikes a deal with the handsome rogue. If he will give her passage to her brother, she will give him the exact location he needs. And both will get more than they expected…

One of my favorite steamy exchanges:

“We need to talk.”

“Talk?” Her brow lifted in what he decided was ridicule. “ Shouldn’t you be topside looking for the enemy ship you let slip away?”

The time long since passed for her to end her biting words. “I understand your thirst for revenge, but you will hold sway your spiteful tongue. I will have no more of it.”

“Then I suggest you take your leave for I have nothing else to offer.”

Her words brought him close, irresistible like honey to a bee. “Oh?”

She stiffened, realizing too late the delicious challenge she presented him. “That’s right,” she said.

“This I know to be a lie.” He put his hand on the door and she pressed her back against the wall. “I can think of many things you can offer me.”

An excerpt:

Kiss largePuerto Plata, Hispaniola, 1726

“Crazy wench. Let go!”

Marisol tightened her grip on the coarse barrel of the pistol poised a mere inch from her face. Death’s diseased aroma wafted over her with the depraved wretch’s breath. A frenzy of alarm pumped through her veins, fueling new untapped strength. “Bloody hell, I will!”

She struggled with him, unwilling to release his gun and reach for her own weapon. She pushed and pulled with the ruffian in a gruesome dance of sorts, a ballet amid the squalid dregs and wet filth of the dark alley. Their curses and grunts chased the shrouded silence back up the stone walls. No passerby would take notice, no more than they would a cheap strumpet and her jack.

Marisol slipped on the slick cobblestones and, losing her balance, brought the vile man down with her.

The pistol went off. An unforgiving percussion echoed down the alley.

He landed on top of her, knocking the wind from her lungs. Sharp pain sliced through her back with the force of the fall. A moment passed, then another.

The man’s weight crushed against her. She gulped shallow, tainted breaths in the pocket of air between his shirt collar and sweaty neck. I must get free. Marisol thrashed beneath the cur. Fear urging her on, she pressed against his chest and shoved him off, rolling him to his back. She scuttled to her knees. But he didn’t move, didn’t get up to finish her off.

What have I done?

Marisol dropped the gun. Blood on her hands trickled down between shaky fingers. She stared at them, turning her hands over to see the crooked red pathways on her skin. Even in the shadows, the deep color glistened. Slowly, she curled her fingers into fists, resting them on her knees, and looked down at the dead man before her. The blood from his chest wound filtered through his tunic, spreading down his side. Spent gunpowder still singed her nose.

Numb emotions lingered beneath her breastbone. She willed herself not to think of him as a man who might be mourned by someone who loved him, a mother, or a wife with children. Would they be waiting for him? Wondering when he would return home?

No. No pity would be spared for the likes of him, a paltry criminal. Had Alain taught her nothing about survival? Warm your rum with the blood of another, for if the bastard gets the chance, your course will be run and the devil will have you.

She would not let the compassion seize her heart. Leave that for the weak-minded.

Marisol took one quick glance around the darkened back street. She wiped the blood against her lap then reached into the dead man’s coat, searching his pockets. She pulled out a pouch containing silver coins, three of them. Marisol forced a smile. How fortunate. Something for her troubles. She stuffed the pouch into the folds of her dress.

Continuing her search, her hand grazed across paper in another pocket. She smiled again as she picked up and read the letter for which she’d been searching. The missive was cryptic but given more time she would be able to decipher it. With any luck, it would reveal the information she so desperately sought, information that could lead her to her missing brother. She would do anything to find Monte. Marisol glanced down at the corpse. Perhaps she had become too desperate. Foolish man. You really should’ve been more careful.

The book trailer:

Fun Fact:

The pirate ship Rissa featured in most of the books in the Romancing the Pirate series is modeled after the notorious Black Beard’s ship Queen Anne’s Revenge.

Even meeting a sexy half-elf shifter who may well be her mate won’t distract her from her goal.

Except Cart Dupree, called in by a high-ranking elf, is fully trained and has the team to search for the evildoer, so she’d be stupid to not use his expertise. Stupid is something she can’t afford to be, not with her enemy’s henchmen after her. Later she’ll deal with Cart and his questions about her special abilities and the non-standard training her mentor has given her. I have to tell you all how excited I am to start hosting editors here on Musetracks for Agent/Editor Shop.

Agent Shop has been a baby of ours here at Musetracks for some time. I’ll give you a little reason why.

When Jenn, John, Marie-Claude and I first met at Charlotte Dillon’s critique group, I can honestly say we were ALL rather green. Maybe not so green that we’d never written anything… We all had novels to share, were ‘sort of” prepared to tackle the publishing world, were semi-certain we had some talent, and one if not all of us had come to realize it wasn’t as easy as simply writing the novel. But we were – newbies.

Together, and with Stacey coming on board, we learned that the road to publishing is a paved road full of potholes big enough to swallow a writer walking with false-bravado blinders. We also found that even if we recognized and worked on our weaknesses, we were very susceptible to falling down, bruising our egos, our hearts, and our muse.

But one of the most important things we learned was how incredibly supportive other writers could be. Not only were we there for one another, hordes of other writers were there as well, offering suggestions, encouragement, quick fixes and heavy hands as was needed.

None of us would have made it to where we are if we’d gone it alone. It simply wouldn’t have happened…

That’s where Musetracks came in. It was our way to give back, to inspire. Our way to support writers at any stage in their career – like we were once and still are supported. Agent Shop is another venue for writers to interact with publishing professionals and has been hugely popular in the almost two years it’s been up and running. We’re hoping that Editor Shop will be as much of a success.

I’m happy to say the awesome Rhonda Penders with The Wild Rose Press will be our first ever guest editor at Editor Shop, and I wish you all the best of luck on pitch day.

December 15th is pitch day, so mark your calendars!
